This week’s reflection from our curate Tish

For week beginning Monday 13th January 2025 : Baptism of The Lord

Reflection for this week

21 Now when all the people were baptised and when Jesus also had been baptised and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved;[a] with you I am well pleased.  (Luke 3:21-23)

Full of the Holy Spirit…. Jesus was led by the Spirit in the wilderness….” (Luke 4:1-2).

The word wilderness led my thoughts to the cycle of national and global mercurial –  even whimsical at times – changes in attitudes of those in leadership positions, with societal and environmental breakdown, especially in very recent decades.  The resulting confusion, despair and sadness from lessons in the past still not learned let alone acted upon means the cycle continues, leaving us as though suspended in a sort of uncertain wilderness – a global wilderness and for many a personal wilderness too – scary and very real.

Although without sin himself, Jesus identified with sinners when he was baptised, showing us the way to Repentance, Redemption and Salvation.   Our journeys begin with Baptism, moving through a Confirmation of our growing faith toward a more mature realisation of who we really are as we try to walk the Way of Jesus in our daily lives up the hills, across bumpy grounds and into the deepest of valleys.

May each of us worship and cherish The One who is always with us, listening, teaching, guiding and directing us to greater depths of faith and discipleship.  Jesus Christ.

Church Clock

You may have noticed that the church clock has stopped; this is because the power supply to the tower had tripped out. We tried to reset it but it tripped out again, probably due to wet or cold. We are now getting an electrician to check out the circuit. So until this is fixed we must apologise for the loss of this useful facility.

Christmas Tree Festival

We are excited about holding our 6th Christmas tree festival this year and hope you will participate by decorating a tree. The festival will run from 13th December – 2nd January 2025

As in previous years, there will be competitions and events to enjoy.

●      The Festival Celebration will take place on Friday, 13th December, at St Mary’s from 5:00 PM- 6:30 PM. There will be music from the Children’s School Choir, free food and drink, and we will switch on the Christmas lights!

●      Test your festive knowledge at the Christmas Quiz, which will take place on Saturday, 14 December, at 6:30 PM.

●      Enjoy a Carol Service at Shorthampton on Sunday, 15 December from 3:00 – 4:00 PM.

If you or your organisation want to participate in the festival this year, support us, or have any queries, please register through the link (https://forms.gle/QJDwZR3XYeQAGtZa8), the QR Code on the poster, or contact Anna.

The money raised will be donated to the St Mary’s appeal and will contribute to the parish’s outreach work. We would love to hear from you if you would like to be involved.

This year, we will collaborate with Cornerstone to support local families struggling to afford Christmas gifts for their children with the Giving Tree. Please consider stopping by the Community Centre, Cornerstone, or St Marys to help support a local kid in need!

Safeguarding Sunday Talk from Louise Whitehead

Louise Whitehead spoke to the congregation at the end of the 10am service on 17th November, Safeguarding Sunday. Louise is our Parish Safeguarding Officer and also the Head of Safeguarding for Oxford Diocese. In her talk, Louise made reference to the difficult events surrounding the horrific abuse by John Smyth and the Archbishop of Canterbury’s recent resignation. Our thanks to Louise.
